Exhibition Concept

Gerwald Rockenschaub came to international attention in the 1980s as a creative artist who easily became one of the pioneering figures with his crossover oeuvre bringing Popular Culture, Design and Club Culture together which question interdisciplinary relationships. He currently lives and works in Berlin. It would not be possible to immediately label him as a painter, sculptor nor a new media artist owing to his close interest in music, design and other creative fields in addition to visual arts. The output is a body of not-so-easily-definable works blending different visual aspects in collage aesthetics. We could call it the Rockenschaub Planet, if not anything else. And his project for Borusan Contemporary can be considered as Rockenschaub Planet’s take on Istanbul. Before moving on to the exhibition project and its outcome, it would be necessary to talk about the nature of this planet. Rockenschaub’s artistic personality is one entirely founded on universal codes and remains detached from any specific cultural character and identity; it offers different visual experiences with little clue at hand.
