When you arrive at Safranbolu, the historic mansions welcome you in an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are numerous cultural remains in the town, 1117 of which are currently under conservation. These sites that are located in two different regions and preserved in its original forms give Safranbolu the appearance of an Open Air museum which has encouraged the decisions by the Ministry of Culture to preserve the city's cultural riches by giving the region the status of a cultural heritage site. It was decided to preserve the buildings as they were and restore the ruins of houses in accordance with their original plans, which made Safranbolu a city reowned in Turkey and in the world.
Turkey co-signed, along with the other countries, UNESCO convention on "World Cultural and Natural Heritages" the objective of which determines and protects the eligible heritage. Safranbolu, nominated by Turkey, was added tothe World's Heritage List at the 18th session of UNESCO that was held in Thailand on 12-17 December 1994.
