Four thousand years ago, the merchants of Bahrain (ancient Dilmun) ranged far and wide, from the Indus River to the Euphrates, bartering and exchanging a wide range of commodities and luxury items. The economic success of their trading ventures led to increased prosperity at home where stone-built temples and settlements appear in the northern and well-watered part of the country by the start of the second millennium BC.
The Dilmun settlement at Saar dates to this time. Excavated between 1990 and 1999 by the London-Bahrain Archaeological Expedition, it is the only Early Dilmun settlement that has been extensively investigated by archaeologists.
This volume, the third in the series, reports on the excavation of over 70 buildings in the settlement, some of which were extraordinarily well-preserved with walls standing in places to roof height. The development and the architecture of the settlement is described and there are chapters on the contents of the buildings, the domestic installations, food remains, metalwork, pottery and other household utensils.
The settlement at Saar provides a unique insight into the social and economic organization of Bahrain in the Bronze Age. The volume will be of value to all those interested in the history and development of Bahrain and the Middle East, and to specialists working in the influential and expanding field of Gulf archaeology.
